CMA Fest Show Review – Walker Hayes – June 12, 2011

Among the new group of country singer-songwriters, I have been paying attention to Walker Hayes for quite some time now. His incredibly creative, left-of-center material is right up my alley. To many he was a new name and I was pleased to see him get a performance slot late enough in the day that there was a substantial crowd gathered in front of the Bridgestone Arena. Country radio sure could use more artists like Hayes so the more new fans made during CMA Fest, the better.

Hayes’ songwriting is, in his own words, “all over the map”. He proved this with new song ‘White Boy’, nothing short of an R&B/rap tune. It’s not just that he has the talent to write this diverse material but that he subsequently has the confidence to stand in front of a country crowd and play it unapologetically. None of his songs fit the mainstream mold but if clever hooks, word play and a good groove are your thing, then he’s your man!

A perfect example of this is Hayes’ debut single ‘Pants.’ Check it out below and dance along. Currently at radio is the new single ‘Why Wait for Summer.’
