Yesterday, Nashville and the worldwide country music family said farewell to George Jones.

Welcomed by Opry announcers Keith Bilbrey and Eddie Stubbs, and George’s pastor, Mike Wilson, a packed Opry House heard his friends pay moving tribute to his life. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam assured Nancy Jones that “Tennessee will never stop loving George Jones,” and First Lady Laura Bush delivered a very touching and beautiful personal message. Pete Fisher spoke of Jones’ love for the Opry and how he never lost his reverence for that famous stage. Among the very moving performances were a Patty Loveless and Vince Gill rendition of ‘Go Rest High on that Mountain,’ with an extended guitar part as Gill fought off tears, a beautiful performance of ‘Farther Along’ by Oak Ridge Boys, and Brad Paisley‘s vulnerable version of ‘Me & Jesus.’ When in the closing performance, Alan Jackson sang those famous words, ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today,’ the place erupted in cheers and loud applause.

It was a beautiful tribute to a man who not only will forever be one of the stalwarts of traditional country music, but also, as we heard from the personal stories shared, a man who showed many how to live a full and humble life.
