The sun was beating down hard on the crowd at this weekend’s second annual Delta Country Jam festival in Southaven, MS. Just as the sweat trickled down our backs and audience members began crafting fans out of pretty much anything they could find (including cardboard boxes), Charlie Worsham stepped out onto the stage. He made it easy to forget about the heat.

Charlie’s stage presence was exceptional. Not only is he a talented musician and singer, he also knows how to interact with the crowd and make people feel good. Charlie quenched the thirst of a very hot, tired audience with his happy-go-lucky personality and infectious smile.

At one point, Charlie jumped off the stage and hung out in the audience for about ten minutes. He took a plethora of “selfies” with fans. In fact, I didn’t see him turn a single person down. It was all sorts of endearing.

I will stop with the love fest and get to the important part – the music. Quite honestly, Charlie sounds better live than he does on his album, Rubberband. Performing hits such as ‘Could It Be’ and ‘Trouble Is,’ his performance was full of energy, passion and presented a general feel-good vibe.

Charlie even took out a banjo and performed his own backwoods rendition of Ozzy’s ‘Crazy Train.’ A Mississippi boy himself, he beautifully executed ‘Mississippi in July,’ which was pretty appropriate considering the festival was located in the lovely “Magnolia State.” Oh, and it may have not been July, but it sure felt like it.

I’ll stop talking about the heat, but let me say that Charlie is definitely worth enduring any temperature – no matter how extreme. He resumes his tour May 30 in St. Louis, MO, and will continue on through summer.
