Last Friday, Nashville country band Acklen Park held their CD release party at 3rd and Lindsley. The 6-piece, led by Marcum Stewart, played a strong set to introduce the new disc.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Rick Huckaby opened the evening and he is, in a word, fantastic. He strung together a series of acoustic songs flavored with rock, country or funk, and even threw in a stunning blues song, ‘Last One to Leave.’ Rick slowly won over new fans with stand-outs ‘Broken Promiseland,’ ‘Hittin’ My Stride,’ ‘Sugarcane’ and the beautiful ‘Like a James Taylor Song.’ You will hear more about him here at UCB! (You can check out videos of his performance here)

Acklen Park is made up of Andrea Villarreal (lead vocals), Marcum Stewart (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jeremy Colas (lead guitar), Rob Ray (keys), Casper Kiser (bass) and Dave Bobrow (drums). They describe themselves as ‘not a typical country band’ and are indeed comfortable blending several styles on top of a solid southern rock base.

Forming a three-part harmony with drummer Dave (how’s that for not typical), both Andrea and Marcum are confident vocalists each fully capable of carrying a song. While solid on ballads, the band sounds best when the tempo goes up. A rocking performance of ‘I Wanna Be’ was the result. Other highlights were ‘Page 29’ and the strong ballad ‘Realize.’

The band kept the crowd entertained with giveaways and banter. The occasional ‘dead air’ can be forgiven since this formation of the band has only been together for about six months. As they tighten up their set over the next few months, it will be exciting to watch Acklen Park develop.

If you want to check out Acklen Park for yourself, they will be at 12th and Porter in Nashville on April 23 for a special acoustic show. Should be good!
