Last night, February 7, 2013 was another busy night in Nashville, with several great acts competing for our attention. Those who picked Lindi Ortega‘s show at The High Watt made the right choice as they saw one of the most exciting emerging artists at the top of her game.

The night was opened by Toy Soldiers, followed by Lindi’s fellow Canadians Dustin Bentall and The Smøkes. Lindi Ortega Live Tour in NashvilleIt was the latter who returned to the stage as Ortega’s backing band with Bentall now on rhythm guitar, James Robertson on lead guitar, Scott Remila on bass, and Rich Knox on drums. As this quintet, the music sounded so tight that if it has not already been suggested, maybe these guys should be offered a permanent gig.

With her little red boots stomping out the rhythm, Ortega commanded the crowd’s attention right from the start. I have said it on these pages before, because we are so spoiled for choice here, it is not always easy for artists to get a Nashville crowd going. It is a test Lindi passed last night with great flair. Pulling songs from her two albums, Little Red Boots and Cigarettes & Truckstops, Ortega strung together a fast-paced set and threw in masterful cover songs which emphasized her massive vocal talent even more. Her remarkable versatility was showcased in her wide range of material, from the defiant ‘Demons Don’t Get Me Down,’ the vulnerable ‘Angels,’ and the sassy ‘Little Lie.’ In her lyrics, she is not afraid of exploring the different, often darker, sides of love on songs like ‘Use Me’ or ‘The Day You Die’, all the way to the sinister twisted tale in ‘Murder of Crows.’ Standouts among the covers were Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang Bang,’ complete with toy gun prop, and an astounding rendition of Johnny Cash‘s ‘Ring of Fire,’ that simply must be heard, so do check out the videos below.
