A newly announced weekly series at Silver Dollar Saloon will have songwriters battle it out during ‘Off the Hook: Dueling Songwriters.’ Actor and songwriter James Aycock created the good-natured competition which each week will crown a ‘King of the Hook.’ Or, presumably also ‘Queen of the Hook,’ when a female songwriter is victorious.

The full press release:

If it’s true that the pen is mightier than the sword, then Nashville is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to its songwriting population. No one recognizes this more than James Aycock, Producer and Emcee of the new weekly series “Off the Hook: Dueling Songwriters,” to be held every Wednesday night (Dec. 4, 11, 18 and Jan. 15) at the Silver Dollar Saloon (110 2nd Avenue North, Nashville) from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The series is best described as dueling piano bar meets “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” pitting songwriters against one another in a fun, friendly competition. Writers respond to audience suggestions, improvise and pull from their own catalogs to meet a series of lively challenges until the last writer remains and is named “King of the Hook.” As always, there is never a cover and seating is limited, so everyone is encouraged to get there early. Songwriters who wish to participate in the show should submit a package to offthehooknashville@gmail.com for an audition. Fans can also follow the series on twitter at @Offthehooknashv and on Facebook at OfftheHook Nashville. For more information on the series, please visit silverdollarsaloon.com.

“Think of it as a mental workout/head-cutting competition for songwriters!” explains creator of “Off the Hook: Dueling Songwriters,” veteran entertainer and songwriter Jim Aycock. An award-winning fine arts major from the University of Alabama, Aycock launched his career as the lead in the Wild West Show at Opryland USA, followed by several national tours in such shows as “Oklahoma!” and “Guys and Dolls.” Throughout his career, Aycock has acted alongside names such as Daniel Day Lewis, Sissy Spacek, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and has been featured in “Walt Disney’s “Tom and Huck,” “The Long Walk Home, and “Stars and Bars.” Additionally, he has lent his voice to numerous national commercials, including Subway, Chevrolet, McAlister’s, AT&T and Timex. As a singer/songwriter, Aycock has released five albums of original music, including two for children. Not currently touring, he lives in Nashville with his wife Cynthia, where he continues co-writing and honing his songwriting craft. For him, it’s another marker along his creative journey and he feels blessed to join the countless others hoping for a few good breaks.
