Toby Keith premiered his video for ‘Hope On The Rocks’ Saturday, December 1.

The song itself paints a picture of several lives that have been changed or ruined in different ways and the way the people themselves choose to react to the situation at hand.

Charlie’s wife filed for divorce/Charlie bought a quarter horse and now he’s riding fence/Upside down and couldn’t pay/They hauled Sue’s mobile home away/And we ain’t seen her since‘.

The one thing that all of these people have in common is that they all end up at the bar, where they find a little hope on the rocks.

Where do they go?/They come here/To drown in their sorrow and cry in their beer/They’re in need of a mindbender/I’m a bartender/At the end of the day/I’m all they’ve got/Hope on the rocks‘.

The video, shot in black and white and reminiscent of classic country videos, mixed with the pouring rain outside the bar sets the mood. Each person is there to drown their sorrow and forget their bad luck in life. As each person is shown with a drink of some kind, you continue to think that their hope on the rocks is just that, a glass of alcohol to help them forget, but as the video plays out, we see that in fact the bartender a.k.a. Toby Keith is actually giving these people hope, and a reason to smile again. From dancing with the young girl who tried to take her own life, to calling a cab for the drunk old man who can’t find his keys that are right in front of him, right up to the woman who is down on her luck and all she needs is a hand to help her back up. The bartender/Keith gives these people a reason to smile and continue on with their lives, delivering the message that maybe they have hit bottom, but there is nowhere to go from there but up. This video is bound to bring some people to tears, as it did me.

A bit of a diversion from some of Keith’s past up-tempo, party anthem songs, this song/video shows a softer side of Toby Keith, one that hasn’t been seen for quite a while, a side of him, which some people may have been missing.
