Last night, Rick Huckaby returned to his home-away-from-home, 3rd and Lindsley, and played the home crowd advantage for all its worth.

Opening with ‘Broken Promiseland’, a song which has in previous shows been a turning point, pushed the energy into the room right from the off. Switching the tempo constantly from song to song, Huckaby and his three-piece band showed off their skill, both in mastery of the material and in engaging the crowd.

Halfway through the show, a dynamic and very funky rendition of ‘Out from Under You’ prompted the audience comment “not bad for a white kid from Louisiana.” Indeed! But not all went smoothly. Momentarily drawing a blank at the start of ‘Devil on a Good Day’, Huckaby needed assistance. But here is where the home fans come in. They helped him out without even needing time to blink.

With the room energized, the high-octane ‘Mash the Gas,’ the always powerful ‘Hittin’ My Stride’, and the can’t-sit-still ‘Can’t Miss Kid’ went over extremely well.

There really are no flaws here (and believe me, I’ve tried to find them) Mistakes are made, sure. Changing the set list with about 4 seconds notice is not the way things are usually done. But with Huckaby’s flair and quick-witted responses to just about everything, mistakes are never allowed to turn into flaws. You simply cannot help but be impressed.

Check out the videos below to catch two of last night’s stand-outs.
