Single Review – ‘Anything Like Me’ – Brad Paisley

Billed as the first single from an upcoming double greatest hits CD, ‘Hits Alive’, Brad Paisley‘s ‘Anything Like Me’ has been released to radio.

The song may be quite unique as I certainly can’t remember another track which starts out at the OB-GYN! Brad shares the very personal and emotional moments that follow after finding out the sex of his unborn child. It starts him off thinking what he might be in for. If his little boy ends up being anything like him, he will get in trouble for doing silly things but he will also grow up with the right values.

With lyrics like ‘he’s gonna love me/and hate me along the way’ and ‘he’s gonna get in trouble/we’re gonna get in fights/I’m gonna lose my temper and some sleep’, it’s the story of a new parent who is enough of a realist to not expect only sunshine and roses of parenthood but who knows the good always outweighs the not-so-good.

The production is minimalist with just lilting guitars and fiddle floating in and out. Perfect choices for a song like this as it leaves the lyrics front and center. With a song this personal, it’s not a surprise Brad sounds like he is really in the middle of this story. On the album version, his son Huck makes a guest appearance and hopefully this will be added to the radio edit as well.

‘Anything Like Me’ still has some Brad Paisley-style self-deprecating humor on it but it is not yet another novelty song. It’s very sweet, very moving and very, very good.
