Songwriters: Eric Paslay and Will Hoge

One of the biggest success stories of 2011, Texas country rockers Eli Young Band triumphed at the top of the singles charts with ‘Crazy Girl’ after a long climb. With the new single, ‘Even if it Breaks Your Heart,’ they are all set to repeat last year’s achievement.

The song has a straightforward message: follow your dreams no matter what the consequences. It is by no means a new idea, but songwriters Eric Paslay (remember the name!) and Will Hoge cleverly crafted a tune so simple that every bit of it feels fresh, all with just sixteen short lines of lyric.

Upon first listen, you will not be able to escape the Tom Petty comparison. By the time the percussion and steel kick in at the start of the second verse, the song could fit on Petty’s Hard Promises record. But Mike Eli’s calm, warm treatment makes this the Texas band’s own song. His interpretation comes from knowing that though he now gets to live his wildest dreams, it all would have been worth it even if he never got to.
