Single Review: Long Hot Summer – Keith Urban

Summer has arrived in the country and at country radio. Keith Urban‘s musical contribution to these picnic days is ‘Long Hot Summer.’

Not straying one inch from a previously successful formula, ‘Long Hot Summer’ is a harmless, countrified pop-rock song with carefree love at its center.

Though there are a few details to be found with imagery of feet on a dashboard, the lyrics are kept vague. The repeated lines which bookend the song leave this whole story wide open to interpretation. Even though the song is written in direct address, the person spoken to might not even be real; she might be a dream living only in the mind of the narrator.

Dann Huff’s production hits all the right spots. The frantic banjo in the chorus adds a subtle shimmer and fights off blandness. The same instrument is used to build up the tension in the first verse and to joyfully close out the song.

Intended as nothing more than a summer hit, this is above all a feel-good song. By the time Urban closes out the song with a smile audible in his voice, you are right there in the car with him, ready to drive off into summer with the windows down and the stereo up high.
