With a new album on the way, Billy Currington return to the country music radio waves with new single, ‘Hey Girl.’

From the opening lines ‘Hey girl, what’s your name girl? / I’ve been looking at you / And every guy here’s doing the same, girl,’ the song never moves beyond a guy’s attempt at winning the interest of a woman he spots during a night out. What it lacks in substance, it makes up for in charm. The songwriters, Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley, and Chris DeStefano, helped things along by creating a character who is easy to like. Sure, he’s just trying to chat her up, but he still prefaces his suggestions with ‘if you want…’ Not unlike Keith Urban, Currington has a knack for taking what on paper seems like a mediocre song and lifting it up with his performance. Here, he pitches it just right so it is no surprise that we hear in the bridge, ‘Baby, you’re still standing here / I guess you must like what you hear.’

His first collaboration with Dann Huff, this is probably the most pop-leaning of Currington’s single releases. Huff does fall back on an old bad habit of adding too much noise in the chorus, but the mix is kept low enough that it doesn’t distract. A very nice touch is letting the music retreat to emphasize the last two lines in each verse and chorus, a trick that plays nicely with the vocal rhythm.

‘Hey Girl’ is at country radio now.
