Single Review: If the Fish Don’t Bite – Eric Paslay

Songwriters: Eric Paslay and Dylan Altman

As country radio prepares for summer, Eric Paslay releases his second single, ‘If the Fish Don’t Bite.’

The lighthearted lyrics walk us into the scene right from the start – Got a bobber floating in the water with a minnow dancing on a hook/You’re singing to the radio, bare feet in the brook/You’re the prettiest catch I could have ever caught/I love you so/’Cause you love coming with me to this fishing hole.

While a song about the non-fishing fun one can have at a fishing hole isn’t exactly a novelty, Paslay’s voice is so unique that he makes it all sound shiny and new. Two simple verses and a catchy chorus are enough for him to build a little story that will charm you, give the volume dial a big turn to the right, and have you singing along. It was the successful formula behind his Top 40 debut single ‘Never Really Wanted’ and it works just as well here.

‘If the Fish Don’t Bite’ is cheerful, commercial country music that avoids the traps many get caught in. It’s an early contender for the summer 2012 soundtrack.
