Songwriter: Granger Smith

Sometimes there’s more to a song than its lyrics, instruments, or vocals. Only a select group of songs are authentic, have a real story behind them, and possess depth. It’s those things that make a song come to life. It’s those things that make the melody flow through your veins.

When I first heard Granger Smith’s ‘Miles and Mud Tires,’ I liked it, but I felt that depth was missing. I tend to feel this way about a lot of country songs. You can only listen to lyrics about trucks, lakes, and bonfires so many times before it becomes monotonous.

It’s not that these kinds of songs aren’t enjoyable or that I won’t turn them up when they come on the radio, it’s simply that they don’t provoke much thought or emotion – and that’s okay.  It doesn’t make a song a bad song.  Similarly, having depth doesn’t make a song a good song.

After listening to ‘Miles and Mud Tires’ a few more times, I went to learn more about the man behind the song. After reading Granger Smith’s biography, recognizing who he is as a person, and listening to the song once more, I had a complete change of heart.

I can’t explain what came over me, but I felt a personal bond with the song. You know when you’ve had a really bad day and the only cure is to get in your car and drive? Of course you do. We all do. That’s what ‘Miles and Mud Tires’ is about.

Granger Smith is as real as they come. He’s been in the music industry since he was a teenager and every song with his name attached to it is created and perfected in his own home and by his own hands. He ensures that each song he writes is authentic. He’s down-to-earth and his music reflects that.

So, if you’re feeling a little burned out, take the long way home. While you’re at it, give ‘Miles and Mud Tires’ a listen. Oh, and go slow. It’s much better that way.
