Single Review: ‘Parking Lot Party’ – Lee Brice

The first three Lee Brice singles of the Hard 2 Love era had varying levels of serious subject matter. Following ‘Hard to Love,’ ‘A Woman Like You,’ and the heartbreaking ‘I Drive Your Truck,’ is the not-at-all-serious ‘Parking Lot Party.’

The song plants us in the middle of a group of tailgaters partying before a show, whether they have tickets or not, and as with most party tunes, all you need is in the chorus:

At the parking lot party
Tailgate buzz just sippin’ on suds
Ain’t never too early
To light one up,
Fill up your cup
‘Cause there ain’t no party like the pre-party
And after the party is the after-party
At the parking lot party

With only a drum loop and some guitar accents, Brice is free to describe the scene in the verses. Soft-rock guitars are added to the mix in the choruses turning this into a sing-along. It’s nice to see another side of Brice after the previous singles and the timing of this release is perfect. There might not be quite enough here for this song to survive beyond the summer season, but by then it will have achieved its purpose. This is the song to play if you’re gathering your friends for a summer party in the parking lot (or if you live in Nashville, on I-24 around evening rush hour).
