Texas country artist Wade Bowen takes on a trend on his new single, ‘Songs about Trucks.’ Whenever there is a popular trend, you will find people who say they hate it, whether genuinely or to establish some sort of hipster cred. ‘Songs about Trucks’ calls out the overload of truck songs on country radio, but does so in a very clever way.
Either to remain respectful, or simply because they know where their bread is buttered, Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark came up with the not-quite-anti-truck song. Bowen takes on the role of a guy who doesn’t dislike truck songs as a rule, but with a newly broken heart just doesn’t want to hear them right now, thankyouverymuch. It works.
But for a trip down memory lane tonight
I need something a little deeper
Than S10 Chevy’s or F150′s
Flatbed, Dodge, Ram, dirt road ditties
With a calm arrangement, the song becomes a wistful midtempo sigh, a peaceful protest from a man who is just not in the mood for loud guitars. It should continue Bowen’s success on Texas radio, and perhaps even wider country radio where I am sure many DJs can get behind this sentiment.
