Following the 2011 stripped-down release, The Singer, Tracy Lawrence is readying a new full production album due to be released early in 2013. Mentions of the new music being “more edgy” had me wondering if he would abandon his familiar sound altogether to keep up with the current rock-influenced country hits. But not to worry. New single, ‘Stop, Drop and Roll,’ is the Tracy Lawrence of old, just freshened up for 2012 country radio.
After the first verse sets up the scene, this song is all about the strong chorus. A weaker second verse – a blemish I keep noticing more and more – adds little but also does no harm. This mature yet playful love song utilizes Lawrence’s strengths superbly.
There is not one superfluous note in this production. As the fiddle provides the accents, the organ floats between the instruments creating a coherent arrangement. Though it has a modern sound, Lawrence’s warm voice makes this feel like old-school country music; the kind which brought so many of us to the genre in the early 1990s. A strong and fun lead-off single, ‘Stop, Drop and Roll’ could put Tracy Lawrence back in the country top 20, where he most definitely belongs.
