Rodney Atkins kicks off a new album era with new single, ‘Doin’ It Right,’ the first offering from his upcoming album.

The guitar melody intro followed by drums and a riff will sound very familiar, as this song starts off in similar fashion to many Atkins hits. Also returning is the ‘music with a message’ theme, as the song’s encouraging narrator explains that whatever you’re doing is just fine, as long as you don’t dwell on mistakes. Can’t disagree with that.

Whether you’re whispering or shouting, driving with the windows up or the top down, it’s all good. The chorus exclaims:
“You’re doin’ it right
You’re shining your light
You ain’t losing your mind
No, everything’s fine”

It would have been nice if the second verse held a little more than another summing up of opposite behaviors, but the two-line bridge does effectively deliver the main message:
“I’ve made every mistake so I oughta know
The only real mistake is not letting them go”

A precussive guitar in the verses drives the song forward. With drums barely brought up in the chorus, the vocals are kept out front in the mix. It is a sonic recipe used by Atkins before, to great effect, and it works here again, though it does all sound less powerful than previous hits (compare and contrast with ‘If You’re Going through Hell’). Even with less affecting vocals, there is enough here to start the countdown to the new album with some radio success.
