Songwriters: Roy Solis, Johnny Garcia and Troy Powers

When you write a song about a topic that has been brought up thousands of times before, it’s important to bring something new to the discussion. Roy Solis‘s ‘Tailgate Party’ does not even seem to try.

Set on repeating the same sort of phrases found in innumerable other songs, this tune wants you to get excited about joining the Tailgate Party – ‘party’ as is ‘collective of people’, not ‘event’. Trying to be clever results in phrases like ‘across the nation/ everyone is joining the tailgation’ and ‘the grill and the girls are smoking’. There is also the lazy merely listing things without making a further point, so in the second verse we find ‘Hillbilly city boys, sweet thangs, RVs, HDs, chicken wings’.

There is nothing wrong with writing a song specifically for a certain target audience. There is nothing wrong with writing a Southern-biased football party tune. But if you are going to go about it in this way, we are not going to want to join whatever your kind of party is.
