Single Review – This Ole Boy – Craig Morgan

Craig Morgan’s first release with Black River Music Group, ‘This Ole Boy,’  is a fiddle-filled, toe-tapping little diddy about a guy and a girl riding in an old Ford (complete with holes in the floor board) down a country road, completely smitten with one another. Sound familiar?  It should. It’s the premise of many a country tune these days. “This ole boy got it going on/ Got the good Lord smiling on me/ Her big blue eyes and the sweet red wine / Got me buzzin’ like a bee / She’s got her pretty little head on my shoulder / Nobody else gets to hold her / But this ole boy.”

Complete with “parking in a hayfield, fogging up the windshield…” lyrics, there is nothing that really that makes this song a standout, not to mention have any clever lyrics.  That being said, musically the production fits the song perfectly as it not overdone or underdone. It is fast paced, snappy, and with a ready-made, country bar, line-dancing beat.  ‘This Ole Boy’ should do well for summer airplay and also bring people up to the dance floor.  Craig, however, does deliver the lyrics (written by Ben Hayslip, Dallas Davidson and Rhett Akins) in such a believable fashion that you imagine he feels exactly this way when he’s riding down a country road with is wife, Karen. It always makes a difference when you believe the artist feels what he is singing!
