It seems that since the Neon era, Chris Young has been struggling a little to find an identity in the country radio landscape. His most recent album, A.M., varies wildly between dumb and cliched dudebro fare and meaningful songs. Second single, ‘Who I Am with You,’ sits somewhere in the middle, with “mediocre” being an applicable label.

“Who I am with you is who I really want to be / You’re so good for me,” Young opens the chorus, and the lyrics never really dig any deeper than this. It merely skims the surface without ever peeling back the layers of the relationship.

It’s not that Chris Young doesn’t sell this song – his vocal performance is great – it’s that there is not much for him to sell. While it’s nice to hear him really sing and not be restricted to his lower range, the flat production dampens what little emotion is left even further. ‘Good enough’ shouldn’t be good enough for someone like Chris Young, and almost everything about this song is run-of-the-mill.

While the song doesn’t sound like all that much thinking went into it, and comes across like an album filler cut rather than a single, it was the most downloaded song when A.M. was released. Maybe that’s an indication of how it might do at radio.
