Single Review – ‘Why Wait’ – Rascal Flatts

Rascal Flatts is turning a new leaf. The trio just signed with Big Machine Records and is finishing the upcoming album, ‘Nothing Like This’. The first single taken from the new record is ‘Why Wait’, released to radio last week.

Over the years, I have been less and less impressed with Rascal Flatts. I loved, and still love, the first two albums but after that I grew tired of the repetition in their work and Gary’s increasingly shrill vocals. And please don’t get me started on the crime against music that is ‘Bob that Head’. So it’s safe to say I wasn’t going into this with high hopes.

But fortunately, the Dann Huff-produced ‘Why Wait’ is a throwback to earlier Flatts days and would not have sounded out of place on ‘Melt’. It’s 50/50 pop and country with a catchy melody to which you just have to dance.

The song has the protagonist trying to convince his girl there’s no reason to wait to get married. As he sums up all the reasons, Gary’s vocals sound good, mainly because he’s again really singing. No ear-splitting oversinging anywhere near this. The production is balanced, includes lots of fiddle and uses electric guitar more for accents than to fill up all the space. The chorus still sounds a little busy but there is no overwhelming, big production.

‘Why Wait’ is sunny and fresh and very much:
