The Big 98 WSIX Features LoCash Cowboys in Thursday Concert Series

A while back, I wrote that if you need to get a party started, there is no one better to call than LoCash Cowboys. Nothing about Thursday’s performance (April 26, Opry Mills, Nashville, TN) suggests that I was wrong about that. If you don’t have fun at one of their shows, I would be concerned about you. The boys performed as part of the Big 98 WSIX Thursday night concert series at Dave & Buster’s at Opry Mills.

Always more interested in who artists really are than in whichever “image” a record label tries to sell me the music with, when I first experienced their live show last year, I went in with an open mind. Having heard the ‘if you don’t like LoCash Cowboys, you’ve probably not seen them play live’ statement several times, I remember thinking: ‘Go on then. Impress me.’ They did.

It was no different this time. If commercial country music is not the main dish in your musical diet, you may, like me, not have been too taken in with previous radio releases, though hopefully with the exception of the (indeed exceptional) ‘Keep in Mind.’ However, the newer songs are great, or even better, and the very newest songs are often extraordinary.

Among my current favorites are the personal and profound ‘Love Believes’ (my goodness, what a great song that is!), ‘Love Drunk’ and ‘Trucks.’ I took a while to warm up to ‘C.O.U.N.T.R.Y.’ but live it absolutely works. The melody sneaks into your head for days and with its disjointed lyrics, it’s downright postmodern. And then there is ‘Bumpin’ Tailgates’… Given my initial reaction when I first heard about it (you can read about that in our recent interview), I love how wrong I was to respond the way I did. A title like this will always lead to a sense of foreboding with me, but they are gifted songwriters and I really ought to trust these guys by now. Lesson learned, again! My friends know that if you want me to dance, you need to put on some Maroon 5, but now there’s another way. ‘Bumpin’ Tailgates’ is witty and catchy, but above all, this song is just so incredibly fun!

Whether you’re already a fan, on the fence, or as skeptical as I once was, I highly recommend getting yourself to the nearest LoCash Cowboys show soon. Even if I still don’t love every song, I always, always love the performance! And I am not alone. When Chris asked the audience if there was anyone there who had not heard of them before, a quiet quartet at a booth near me raised hesitant hands. So I decided to keep an eye on them. Not only did they stay til the end, they left with big smiles on their faces.

Future Big 98 WSIX Thursday shows will feature Kristen Kelly (May 3) and Jeff Bates (May 10). Check out the WSIX website for all the details.
