In and around Nashville, you never have to search long to find a great night of local music. On Friday July 13, 2012, blues duo Scissormen entertained the friendly Franklin, TN crowd at Kimbros Café; an adorable venue (which also serves great food!) on Margin Street.

The evening was opened by Americana singer-songwriter Reneé Wahl and her 3-piece band. She kicked off with cheerful ‘On Something New,’ from her 2010 release, Cumberland Moonshine, got dark and sinister with the twisted love story in ‘Keeping You for Mine,’ and worked her way through alt-country tales of triumph and disaster. Though the set fell victim to one of the perils of smaller venues (“sorry about the technical difficulties”), Wahl filled the breaks by playing trivia games with the audience, and finished very strongly with new song ‘Wild Living,’ the title track of her upcoming album, before closing out with Chris Isaak cover ‘I’m Not Waiting.’

Scissormen, made up of guitar player Ted Drozdowski and drummer Matt Snow, announced their presence with the simple statement: “We’re going to play some blues for you.” And so they did. Their swampy delta sound flowed from the stage from opener ‘Shake ’em on Down’, followed by Drozdowski himself. No stage can contain Scissormen for long and you will find Ted going on walkabouts with his guitar, making use of whatever objects are around. Soda cans, a beer bottle, a knife, and even the tip jar were recruited to play slide guitar. The duo told a Mississippi ghost story on ‘The River,’ and gave a first outing to brand new song, ‘Lived to Tell.’

A Scissormen show doubles as a blues music history lesson and they will bust out some Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson or John Lee Hooker and proceed to do those legends more than justice. The whole performance – Ted is as entertaining to hear speak between songs as he is to watch playing them – is nothing short of very impressive. But then, when you are capable of playing a 1-string guitar (yes, I said 1 (one) string) you can do pretty much anything!
