Oh, the mysteries of love. Early on in a relationship we wish for a little more security; a while into a marriage we long for a little more unpredictability. Such is the premise of Carter’s Chord new single, ‘A Little Less Comfortable.’

Becky, Emily and Joanna tackle the subject head-on right from the opening lines – ‘don’t wanna go through the motions/just because it’s easy/won’t you give me that old look/like you used to when you’d see me’ – backed by restrained acoustic guitar. The song continues to explore how life seemed to be more enjoyable when it was ‘a little less comfortable’, counting every penny and still caught up in the rush of new love.

The music swells with piano and electric guitar headed into the chorus in which the girls lament the loss of spontaneity with the lines ‘like when you would wake me up in the middle of the night/kiss me like your lover instead of just your wife’

‘A Little Less Comfortable’ offers merely an observation, it doesn’t pretend to offer a solution to the problem of sacrificing excitement for comfort. The lyrics are strong enough all by themselves but when belted out with perfect three-part harmonies, this song becomes a stand-out.
