Single Review – Angels in the Snow – Marthia Sides

With Christmas singles, you either go traditional or novelty and Marthia Sides has chosen the former on her holiday song, ‘Angels in the Snow.’
Playing with the concept of snow angels, the song describes a mother and daughter relationship before and after the daughter passes away. The heavy subject is handled well and Marthia’s naturally vulnerable sounding voice fits this material. The only downside of the vulnerability is that without a strong production it quickly sounds weak and that is the case on a few occasions. While the arrangement is fitting, the producer had a very light touch here.
This type of song doesn’t usually stay with me but after having listened a few times, I found myself humming it about an hour later. ‘Angels in the Snow’ is perhaps not quite strong enough to really stand out but it will be a great fit for December programming at country radio.
