Songwriters: Kristen Kelly, Paul Overstreet, Even Stevens

Kristen Kelly is following up her sassy debut, ‘Ex-old Man,’ with a bluesy love song, ‘He Loves to Make Me Cry.’

‘He loves to make me cray / loves to make me weep / puts those tears in my eyes / not the bitter but the sweet,’ Kelly starts off the song, immediately dispelling the notion that this is anything but a love song. She goes on to describe a romantic evening so perfect that it will likely be hard to focus on whatever you were doing when this song comes on the radio. The sensual lyrics never cross the line, and Kelly’s vocal performance squeezes out every drop of emotion they hold.

Producers Tony Brown and Paul Overstreet built the track around Kelly’s voice. With guitars borrowed from the 1950s and overall a very warm arrangement, they’ve made this sound great. There is minimal percussion tightly keeping time, with not one cymbal crash in the whole song, and the mix only gets little more complicated by the third pass of the chorus.

‘He Loves to Make Me Cry’ is a very strong single, and should do well continuing to build Kristen Kelly’s name at country radio.
