Tim McGraw has started a new chapter in his long career. The switch to Big Machine Records has clearly energized him. Following his debut song with the label, ‘Truck Yeah,’ which many saw as a departure in style, he chose as the second single ‘One of Those Nights.’ It is a return to his absolute best.

Taking on the role of narrator, he describes a perfect date night, and, addressing the male character tells him that ‘Someday you’ll be looking back on your life/At the memories/This is gonna be one of those nights.’ The lyrics focus in on the little moments our most cherished memories tend to be made of, and by the end of the story McGraw offers: ‘Full moon through a crack in the windshield/You hold her close and you’ll never forget how her heart beat feels/No, you never will’

McGraw sat once again in the co-producer seat with Byron Gallimore. The long-time creative partners recreated Tim’s sound from the Dancehall Doctors album days – piano, organ, floaty pedal effects – with the one concession to current country radio being the loud guitar interludes. This is offset by his most effective, and affecting, vocal performance since ‘She’s My Kind of Rain.’

The second single drawn from upcoming album, Two Lanes of Freedom, due out Feb 5, 2013, ‘One of Those Nights,’ is about to just sneak into my list of favorite releases in 2012.

‘One of Those Nights’ is available on iTunes.
