Following his debut single, top 15 hit ‘Something to Do with My Hands,’ Thomas Rhett gets a little more serious on the follow-up. From the hypothetical of ‘if you could have a conversation with a historical figure…,’ he imagines what he would do if he could have a ‘Beer with Jesus.’

Rhett co-wrote the song with Rick Huckaby and Lance Miller, and if he’d get the chance, first and foremost, he would make sure to take his time. ‘If I could have a beer with Jesus/Heaven knows I’d sip it nice and slow, the song starts. It is the three choruses, all built on the same frame but each slightly different, that form the heart of the song by getting to the heart of the matter:
How’d you turn the other cheek
To save a sorry soul like me
Do you hear the prayers I send
What happens when life ends
And when you think you’re comin’ back again
I’d tell everyone, but no one would believe it
If I could have a beer with Jesus

The first verse takes its time, nice and slow, to set up the story but, the only minus, the shorter second verse merely repeats the notion that he would make the conversation last but it doesn’t add anything new.

Producer Jay Joyce knows exactly how to frame a song like this. He builds just enough of an acoustic foundation to let the song sit on top of, with not one superfluous note added. Having been left plenty of space in which to sing, Rhett tells you the story like he’s the guy sitting next to you at the bar.

‘Beer with Jesus’ shows the thoughtful, philosophical side of Thomas Rhett, with a single that has the potential to far outdo his debut.
