Single Review – ‘Stuck Like Glue’ – Sugarland

The new Sugarland song is insanely, ridiculously catchy. The night after I first heard it, it actually showed up in a dream. That’s how much (and how quickly) it lodges itself into the brain…

‘Stuck Like Glue’ is the first single off upcoming steampunk-inspired album ‘The Incredible Machine’. In their effort to blend just about every music style going, Sugarland has created an incredibly unique sound of their own. Even before Jennifer opens her mouth, this is unmistakably a Sugarland song. For me, this is a good thing.

With a country base including lots of mandolin and accordion, the song has a melody that’s all pop. The quite rootsy production is kept so simple it could have sounded like a singalong on the beach but Jennifer’s vocals are a bit too on top for that. With Kristian’s voice nicely blended in, this sounds like a single by a true duo.

Like their previous lead-off ‘All I Want to Do’, this is percussive and playful, silly and sassy, creative and confident. The joy in Jennifer’s performance is noticeable in every single sentence; the smile in her voice so bright it starts to affect her phrasing in places.  The only part I do not care for is the little descent into reggae. It’s not so much the style of it as the rather silly island accent used. Unnecessary.

While many will take issue with this going out on country radio because “it’s really a pop song”, this is by no means like the many rehashes of country-pop pervading radio. This is Creativity by artists who challenge themselves and don’t feel they need to prove how country they are by singing about huntin’ and gettin’ drunk.

With radio’s tendency to play a hit 10 times an hour I may start to get enough of this but until then this is very much:

‘Stuck Like Glue’ is available on iTunes here.
