Even though Ashley Gearing is only 19 years old, her first chart hit is already 7 years behind her. Her rendition of ‘Can You Hear Me When I Talk to You’ entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart when she was just 12, making her the youngest artist to have appeared on there. Now, signed to Curb Records, Ashley is making another run at the charts with new single ‘What You Think about Us.’

The song tells a fairly straightforward story – a couple has been dating for an unspecified amount of time, the guy says he wants to take it slow but the girl pleads with him to tell her how he feels. And I mean, really pleads with statements full of neediness such as ‘I wanna be the only thing on your mind’. Her desire for commitment is expressed in the rather lame line ‘I wanna be the one that calls you baby.’ 

With an unnecessarily big production Ashley is forced to battle all the music behind her. She wins by virtue of her great vocal talent but having to belt out a plea such as this makes her sound more desperate than anything.

Ashley Gearing is better than lyrics like this and I hope the other material she is working on is of a quality worthy of her voice.
