CMA Fest Show Review – LoCash Cowboys – June 12, 2011

As this performance was announced, I heard something I had been told before – ‘if you are not a LoCash Cowboys fan, it’s because you haven’t seen them play live yet.’ I had two reasons to go check out their Riverfront performance on Sunday, June 12. A few months ago, I interviewed Chris and Preston (read it here) about songwriting and they had made interesting points which made me curious about their live show, especially the new material. And further, I just had to see for myself if they really could reel people in by virtue of their stage antics alone. And boy, could they! This set was so much fun to watch! Even when singing songs which I don’t think are all that strong, the performance still was. ‘Here Comes Summer’, to me, still sounds interchangeable with any number of summer songs but Chris and Preston kept up the energy, constantly pulling at their audience, trying to win you over. And they most likely will. This being the last day of CMA Fest, I was extremely tired but by the end of their set, they got me on my feet! A great rendition of the beautiful ‘Keep in Mind’ was the only calm moment in a whirlwind show.

One new song worthy of being singled out is ‘Trucks.’ During the interview it was mentioned that this was written with another artist in mind but Chris decided it should stay in the LoCash camp. I can see why. There actually is a way of doing these “tailgatin’ songs” extolling the virtues of being “country” in the right way, and this is it, first and foremost because the song has a sense of humor about it all. Though a new song, by the end of it, the crowd were hollering the hook ‘if we all drove trucks, we’d all get along’ right back at the boys.

Where these guys got their energy from on this very hot afternoon, I do not know. They were there to party with existing and soon-to-be fans and no weather condition was going to stop them. Preston even found the energy to climb up the side of the stage set. They closed the set, which as I understand it is their tradition, with ‘Fight for Your Right to Party’. This performance left me feeling happy and energized, surely the mark of a successful show!

One of the songs discussed in the interview was ‘You Gonna Fly,’ recorded by Keith Urban. It is my personal favorite on the Get Closer album for its positivity. The LoCash Cowboys’ own take is more forceful, a little edgier and at least as enjoyable. Check out the video below.
