Next month, Jamey Johnson will release his 25-track epic, The Guitar Song and it is promising to be a very special album. On new single, ‘Playing the Part,’ Jamey assumes the role of a man who is living the high life which came at too high a price and who is remembering how simple things used to be.

Not just another ‘it’s better to be country’ sermon, this is the story of a man looking back on life choices which probably seemed like a good idea at a time. As usual, Jamey talks straight when describing life with mentions of too much alcohol, expensive women, and anti-depressants but the song is not unnecessarily dark. While self-blame is evident, you still get the sense the narrator might not be ready to give this life up.

One of the main reasons for this song’s authenticity, is that Jamey actually knows what he is talking about. he has jumped through the Nashville hoops and has been around long enough to see many artists give up too much for the fame and fortune. With songs of this quality, I hope Jamey continues to hold up a mirror to the industry for a long time.
