Once more unto the breach, my friends, once more…

Following his debut single, ‘Cowboys and Angels,’ Dustin Lynch could have continued along the same neo-traditional path. Instead he choose ‘She Cranks My Tractor.’

In this ‘she turns me on’ song, the songwriters – of which at least the last two should know better – pay the woman compliments (I suppose) with lines like ‘she’s 10 pounds of sugar in a 5 pound sack’ (what does that even mean?!) and then sink to an embarrassing low with crude euphemisms – ‘I got the rifle/she’s got the rack.’  That says it all really.

In the accompanying music video, when we first meet the woman, she rolls out from under a tractor with perfect hair and make-up, wiping away non-existent sweat, not a drop of grease on her daisydukes and tight white tanktop, and her feet in leopard-print 4-inch heels. Of course. When you use this kind of language and your video looks like a Maxim photoshoot, popularity you will gain; credibility (and my respect) will allude you.

This shouldn’t be so difficult. There is nothing wrong with writing about a beautiful woman. Many country artists, who appeal to both female and male audiences, manage to do so while treating her with respect and without reducing her to a collection of body parts. (See Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Kip Moore, Lee Brice, et. al.)

The song claims that ‘a girl like that’s what a country boy’s after.’

I am willing to believe that.

Country men presumably know better.
