Single Review – The House Rules – Christian Kane

For several years, Christian Kane has been playing this song, ‘The House Rules’, at live shows, always to good reception. Understanding that a debut single should give you an idea of who an artist is, this release was a logical and good choice. The fact that more mainstream country radio might not go near it should be neither here nor there.

On ‘The House Rules’, co-written with Blair Daly, we are all attending a party at Casa Kane and are firmly but politely made aware of the code of conduct. Egos and bad moods are to be left at the door, you will be expected to enjoy yourself, and rule #7 makes the party especially enjoyable if you’re a girl.

With a loose production, the music has the sponaneity of a band who just set up, ready to start their set. It’s been carefully crafted to sound like a jam session – not easy. Where the song really comes to life is on stage. The mark of a well-written song is that it works in different forms and whether it is with full band backing or with only Steve Carlson joining him, ‘The House Rules’ is the center piece at life shows.

With even stronger tracks than this waiting in the wings, here’s hoping country radio takes a chance and backs this single up.

‘The House Rules’ is the title track of Christian’s upcoming (and long-awaited!) debut solo CD which will be released on December 7.
